Creating separate sides is problematic. There are men who believe sexual assault is a terrible thing and they take the women's 'side.' Not welcoming them in the rally leads to ignoring an important support. This is not only a women's problem. There are so many men out there who were abused. They don't have a take back the night. The protest should be against violence. Of course, this does not take into account the abuses by women. Then, of course, there is the Brandon Teena case, an example of sexual hate crimes of homophobia. this should be addressed, too. there is also gay men, where is their rally?? i don't know. i wish it were designed for people, not women... ===================== Lyndseygrrrl (1.08a): even though i didnt feel it tonight, its supposed about us, people born with vaginas... who feel/are made to feel like we are less powerful than people who assert power over us (mainly people with penis' but sometimes other women) and having a safe environment to say that it isnt okay and being able to be with other people that feel the same way in order to feel safe and like we are not powerless. however that isnt what i felt tonight. you ask what it means a lot throughout your journal... and i guess that is my answer to you for me. ===================== AmyAbsolut (1.09a): i never liked take back the night. for sure it's not inclusive, its scope is limited, and i think it organizes around pity and powerlessness LPboy21 (1.11a): wow, i'm getting good responses from everyone... AmyAbsolut (1.11a): thats because you're right. the root of take back the night's cause IS violence not "sexism" really AmyAbsolut (1.15a): aren't you sick of all these fragmented causes? AmyAbsolut (1.18a): everything seems so linked, and yet we try to break it up all the time and pit parts of ourselves against the other, people against people, when it's so much bigger than that. |
